A practical guide to planning your home interior budget

Read time: 5 min

“How much will my home interiors cost?”

There is no single answer. A 2BHK can cost ₹12 lakh, ₹20 lakh, ₹30 lakh or more depending on size, materials, furniture, storage, lighting, customization and scope of work.

The biggest mistake homeowners make is looking only at the price per square foot.

A Simple 2026 Budget Guide

As a broad starting point:

Interior LevelApprox. Cost / Sq. Ft.Essential₹1,000–₹1,800Mid-Range₹1,800–₹3,000Premium₹3,000–₹4,500+

These are planning ranges, not fixed prices. Location, materials, labour and project scope can significantly change the final cost.

Example: 1,000 Sq. Ft. Home

  • Essential: ₹10–18 lakh

  • Mid-range: ₹18–30 lakh

  • Premium: ₹30–45+ lakh

The same home can therefore have very different budgets depending on the design specification.

Where Does the Money Go?

A complete interior project can include:

  • Kitchen

  • Wardrobes

  • TV and storage units

  • Furniture

  • False ceiling

  • Electrical work

  • Lighting

  • Painting

  • Flooring and wall finishes

  • Curtains and upholstery

  • Appliances

  • Civil work

  • Hardware

  • Installation

  • GST

Not every quotation includes all of these.

That is why two designers can quote very different prices for the same home.

What Makes the Budget Increase?

Materials

Laminate, veneer, acrylic, PU, stone and specialty finishes all have different price points.

Hardware

Premium hinges, channels and storage accessories increase both cost and functionality.

Custom Furniture

Bespoke sofas, beds, consoles and dining furniture can significantly increase the budget.

Lighting

Cove lighting, profile lights, decorative fixtures and smart lighting require additional products and electrical work.

Civil & Electrical Changes

Moving walls, plumbing points, electrical points or ceiling layouts can add considerable cost.

Where Should You Spend More?

If your budget is limited, prioritize things you use every day:

Kitchen hardware Storage Lighting Sofa and mattress High-use surfaces Quality fittings

You don’t need premium materials everywhere.

Use expensive finishes as feature elements and balance them with cost-effective materials elsewhere.

Don’t Compare Quotes by Price Alone

A ₹20 lakh quotation isn’t necessarily cheaper than a ₹22 lakh quotation.

The ₹20 lakh quote might exclude:

  • Lighting

  • Curtains

  • Civil work

  • Furniture

  • Appliances

  • GST

Always compare the scope, materials, brands, hardware and inclusions before comparing the final price.

The Most Expensive Mistake: Late Changes

Changing your kitchen finish after production, moving electrical points after the ceiling is complete, or adding storage after painting can quickly increase costs.

Good planning saves money.

Finalize your layout, materials, electrical points, storage and lighting before execution begins.

Design Your Budget Around Your Lifestyle

Ask yourself:

  • How long will I live here?

  • How much storage do I need?

  • Do I cook frequently?

  • Do I work from home?

  • Do I entertain often?

  • Which rooms matter most?

  • Do I want smart-home features?

Your answers should determine where your money goes.

Final Thought

Interior design isn’t about spending the most.

It’s about spending in the right places.

A well-planned ₹20 lakh home can feel more luxurious than a poorly planned ₹40 lakh home.

Because true luxury comes from:

Better planning. Better proportions. Better lighting. Better materials. Better storage. Better detailing.

Your home doesn’t need the biggest budget. It needs the right budget.
